Why Visit: Spectacular views of Valhalla and Kokanee Provincial Park and Slocan Lake. Vehicle access to Incredible alpine ridgeline walk on well maintained trail to old Forestry Fire Lookout. Road and trails travel past the mines of the Silvery Slocan in the 1890's. This is a MUST DO for everyone young and old.
When: July-September. Road from Sandon not plowed in winter.
Access: Vehicle: From Sandon follow 12km steep and narrow 2WD dirt road to two small parking lots in the Alpine of Blue Grouse Basin. The drive from New Denver takes a little longer than one hour to the parking lot. From Highway 31A from New Denver, or Kaslo take the turnoff to Sandon 12 km from New Denver. A further 9 km on a good dirt road leads to Sandon The road is very narrow and sometimes steep although usually in very good condition. Please drive carefully, remember close pullouts and be courteous to other drivers. There are two parking lots, and two trails leading to the summit however neither is easier or less spectacular a hike.
Things to do: Hiking – To West - Forestry Lookout 2km, To East - Selkirk Peak 4km, To Silverton Creek Rd – Wakefield Trail 8km 3000 ft., North Ridge Trail. Numerous trails from Sandon including Galena Trail from New Denver, K&S Railway ( Payne Bluffs ), Payne Mtn and the Old Sandon Rd. Wild Flowers – late July Moutain Biking – Map available in New Denver includes mining roads and singletracks. Mining History – See Sandon Museum for exhibits and maps. Paragliding – Advanced mountain thermal flying ATV – on old mining trails Skiing – Backcountry skiing
Idaho Peak is the site of a forestry lookout above the small town of New Denver. A very well known and well visited alpine area. The wildflowers can be spectacular, the views of the Slocan Lake, Valhalla’s, Kokanee, and Lardeau Ranges are unrivaled. Take a camera. A longer option to descend or ascend is the Wakefield trail leading up from Silverton Ck 1000 m below
