Slocan Chief Cabin/Kaslo Lake
| |
| This is probably the most popular hike in the West Kootenays, and accesses an extensive alpine region, including the Kokanee Glacier. The trail itself starts from Gibson Lake (please see page 15) and quickly climbs on an old road through thick trees and many switchbacks. After the first grunt section the mountains open up and a real trail crosses large slide paths to Kokanee Lake - a great destination in its own right. The trail is well traveled and soon sign posts indicate possible options, including Slocan Chief Cabin, Kaslo Lake Camping area. There is accommodation available at the Cabin for a moderate fee for this first there, the camping area is a couple of minutes away. A great number of day hikes are available from this point, and maps are usually available at the Cabin, Gibson Lake, or from the attendant rangers. Smugglers ridge heads straight up from the Cabin for an hour with great views of the Kokanee Glacier. Sunset Pass, Joker Lakes, Enterprise Pass or Outlook Mt. are some of the other possibilities. | |
