The north end of the Kootenay region is dominated by wilderness, huge mountains, glaciers and deep valleys. Logging roads have penetrated deep into these wilderness, changing the landscape and access every year. We love to curse the clearcuts but love to drive deep into the wilderness up the new roads. Care must be taken on these roads as they are made for the logging trucks and recreation is only a by-product. Keep your lights on, drive defensively and many people listen to the logging channels on radio.

Access to this trail is from the very north end of Kootenay Lake just south of the Lardeau Service Station. The road is called the Duncan Lake Forest Road and is signposted for Fry Ck, and Purcell Wilderness Conservatory (the trails for Hammill Ck, and Fry Ck - see page 13) The road crosses the Duncan River, which is an impressive sight, and continue travelling north past the turnoff for Fry Ck, and Argenta. The Glacier Ck Road is at the 12km mark, a large campsite is on the lake at this point too. The turn-off for Macbeth Icefield trail is 10 km further and sign posted. The next 2km are quite rough, and possibly impassable by your vehicle. Walk when prudent and continue up the trail through dense forest and then steep switchbacks. The trail eases and disappears around Graymalking Lake with the steep headwall, and waterfall of the Macbeth Icefield looming above
