| Park at the summit at Retallack and locate the logging road on the North side of the highway. The road travels west on the flat and then starts switchbacking through the trees for two hours. The road moves out across some huge avalanche runout zones, but there is also the possibility to tour up the ridgeline although it is very steep as well. A little higher it becomes obvious to seek out a treed ridgeline for easier and safer travel. The ridge seems to disappear forever upwards but eventually flattens out somewhat and alternative tours and descents can be made to the east or west. Be warned although it is obvious that there are some huge avalanches that can rip through this area, and to select your route and descent with a lot of care. The Ministry of Highway does Avalanche Control in this area because the slopes threaten the road. Be aware that there may be live explosives and that avalanche control could occur at any time. | |
